19th Century Carte de Visite Album

Origin

The Clarendon Collection includes a leather-bound album of Cartes de Visite and loose photographs from the middle of the 19th century. This belonged to the Cox family and its content reflects that family’s presence in Britain, Germany, mainland Australia and Tasmania - where they founded the property Clarendon which is now held by the Trust.

The images range from personal photographs of family members to souvenirs and popular collections of the day such as notable intellectuals and the German imperial family. The cartes seem to date throughout a range starting in the mid 19th century and ending in the early 20th. In most cases an exact date in unavailable, indeed in most cases there is no information at all to accompany the image.

Where possible additional information concerning the image and also the photographer is shown. (Caution should be exercised when dating the images from the photographers' details.) The locations of the photographers' studios are shown on the map below.
