Excerpt from the Cox Family History
Return to Introductory page
This is a transcript of a 3-page letter from John Cox to a Mr John Ritchie, who was the executor of his father's estate, announcing that he is remaining in Germany and requesting funds to join the armed forces there. (The James he refers to is James Cox, his brother).
His father, John Cox Senior, had died at sea on the way to England from Australia in 1853 leaving John with his mother Frances Cox and siblings who all traveled to Germany after staying for a time in England.

Brunswick
25th May 1867
My dear Sir
I have made up my mind to remain in Germany and to enter the cavalry regiment of the Duke of Brunswick.
I shall require 300£ for my equipment and beg of you as a favour to let me have the money at once as I shall have joined before you receive this and will have to borrow the money until I receive it from you.
Should you not be able to get all my money at present please do lend |

me the 300£ at the same rate of interest as my money is bringing and repay yourself as soon as either of the terms are up.
If possible send me the whole or part of the money by return of post as the delay of a month will make a great difference to me.
We expected war here about a fort-night ago but it went off smoothly in a conference they had at London

I was glad to hear James had succeeded in getting a situation. Mrs Ritchie and the children are I hope quite well and happy and also that you are still strong and healthy.
Mamma sends her love to you and now my dear sir hoping to hear from you soon
I remain
Yours truly
John Cox. |
