HERITAGE PROPERTY ARCHIVES

Since the establishment of the National Trust of Australia (Tasmania) in 1960 the documentation of Tasmania’s built and cultural heritage has been a key focus of the organisation. Over the past half century the National Trust has largely through the work of its many volunteers developed a significant archive on heritage properties throughout the state.

This archive supported the National Trust’s ground breaking work on the classification and recording of significant heritage buildings and sites throughout the state. The archive later contributed significantly to the heritage site documentation for those places entered into the Tasmanian Heritage Register established by the Tasmanian Heritage Council.

The archive reflects the changing community perceptions of heritage within Tasmania and the increasingly broader criteria being applied to heritage significance assessment. As is to be expected in such an archive the extent of documentation including images for each heritage property or place varies substantially.

Through the support of the Tasmanian Community Fund and Arts Tasmania the National Trust has been able to consolidate this archive and digitize a significant number of the images contained within the individual property or place files.

The first two stages of this project have resulted in some 2700 properties and more than 2000 images in the north, north-east and north-west of the state being made accessible on the National Trust’s website.  Over time the National Trust plans to continue to make additional property files and digitized images from other areas of the state available on this site.

For those seeking further information on specific properties for which information may be held by the National Trust it is important to recognise that as well as the property archive files additional information may be held on other National Trust data bases.

Technical background

The archive is divided into three sections; North & Northeast, Northwest and South. The North and North-eastern section is currently available here. See the Contents menu on the left of this page

The registration number, address of the property or location and any associated images are available for the public to view on the following pages.

The records are listed in order by Municipality. As the pages contain one record per line and are quite wide they  may require that you scroll to the right to see all the information.

Any image-based content is listed as a series of links on the right hand side of each page at the end of the record. The images here are only 800pixel medium-resolution images rather than full size due to space constraints on this website. Clicking on an image link opens it in a new window.

The records in the archive represent the files at the time the archive was closed in 2006

Further Information

The Trust may in some instances be able to supply further information on the properties or locations listed in the archive upon request. This information may be in the form of higher resolution images, information on the property/location concerned from within the archive itself (only images have been digitized) or through the Trust's other internal resources.

The Trust charges for undertaking research and for also for any images that are provided as a result.
