Join us in visiting the homes of two of the early farming settlers in Moonah, George Gatehouse (1778-1838) and Harry Benjafield (1845-1917) and discover the trials and tribulations of early farming in the area. Gatehouse Farm, established in 1820 by George Gatehouse, became the site of perhaps the finest garden and orchard in the colony in its time, after a failed attempt at establishing a brewery. Derwent Park (later known as Albert Park with its homestead Dorset House) was acquired by Harry Benjafield for large-scale dairy farming in 1881, but later prospered as an orchard. The tour commences at Dorset House, 4 Dorset Place, Moonah at 1:30 pm and concludes at Gatehouse Farm, 15 Hamel Street, Moonah at approximately 4:30 pm. The two properties are approximately 300 metres apart. Local on-street parking is available. Afternoon tea will be served at Gatehouse Farm. R.S.V.P Essential: Please respond by 17th February 2012

Traditionally fairs were common in Victorian times when Franklin House was built. They brought the community together to sing, dance and be merry.
Often animals were brought and sold, even employment was found. We will not have live animals for sale, or employment ( though new volunteers are always welcome)but there will be entertainment for the whole family. Morris dancing, croquet on the lawn, heritage games and face painting for the younger ones, West Tamar brass band and the pipes and drums. Food is always important at fairs and there will be a BBQ, Devonshire teas, sandwiches etc.
The selling of local wares will be in the form of stalls selling plants and produce, including vegetables from our own Victorian kitchen garden, cakes, books, bric a brac and much more. There is no cost to visit the fair, and a gold coin donation to view the house.
Anyone interested in having a stall, please contact Hilary Keeley, 0363447824, or email
